
Regional Innovation Challenge: Support digital and process-based problem solvers across seven health care systems and tens of thousands of staff

- Created, led, and delivered content for a novel 10-month VISN 21 (regional) innovation accelerator
- Supported 30 projects from Hawaii to Las Vegas by focusing on problem-framing/solving methods, e.g., data collection, synthesis, problem prioritization, solutions, metric collection and analysis, business case analysis, and storytelling skills.
- Trained innovation facilitators to grow skills in VA staff so they could lead their own innovation programming

Urgent Care Challenge: Veterans default to costly Emergency Departments (ED), identify trends to address needs through alternative care modalities
Key Contributions & Outcomes
- Scoped problem space from $30 million in ED facility costs and collected quantitative data for ED admissions (Inclusion criteria cost >$10,000 AND include ICD-10 codes commonly found in urgent care cases).
- Clean data and perform cost and count regression analysis to identify trends across age and county categories, refit the model accordingly. Flag outliers as an opportunity for immediate action.
- Map moving average to capture disease cycles.
- Presented findings in a write-up for leadership feedback and time-based implementation and communications based on seasonality to route Veterans to other care modalities such as Primary and Urgent care.
